Hicks, Elias
(1748–1830)
   Denomination Founder.
   Hicks was born in Long Island in America, of Quaker parents. From 1779 he became a popular itinerant preacher and he was particularly eloquent in his disapproval of slavery. He also insisted that the Quakers should not be bound by a formal creed and he emphasised ‘the Christ within’ every individual. In 1827, following his preaching, some Quakers withdrew from the Society of Friends and established their own meetings in protest against those who wanted to enforce a written doctrine. In 1902 the Hicksites, as they were called, formed their own confederation, the Friends’ General Conference.
